Choosing a Business Name

You want your new business to be a success and to make that possible one of the things you will need to do is to choose an appropriate business name. How do you do that exactly?

There is no magic formula for the proper business name and therefore you have to gear the name you choose on the type of business you are starting as well as your own personal style and what your individual tastes are. There are some guidelines however that will help you settle on the name that is best. A business name that will stand out is one that is distinctive as well as memorable with a stylish flare. Choose a name that is easy to pronounce and easy to spell. A good business name should give some indication as to the services and/or products that your business offers and finally you need to choose a name that sets you apart from all of your competitors.

Three questions to ask yourself

Professional creativity as well as personal creativity plays an essential role in deciding upon a business name. When considering different business names you need to ask yourself three relevant questions which are:

  1. Will you seek trademark protection for your business name or not?
  2. Is the name you are considering available for you to use or has it already been taken by another party?
  3. If you choose to create a website for your company (which is highly recommended with the growing popularity of the online market) is a domain name that is similar to your business name available or will you have to choose a domain name that is different?

Be optimistic and think beyond small

You need to be realistic when you are starting out but you should also look optimistically toward where you want your business to go in the future. Forget about thinking small, think big and get excited about your new venture. Let this be reflected in the name you choose.

Don’t push your business into the smallest corner possible

Making sure that the business name you choose has a descriptive element or a descriptive term is a good way to help market your business and in some areas it is required by law so customers can easily identify what you are all about. However if the business name you choose is limiting and you decide to expand your business in the future, this could work against your continued success. When choosing a business name don’t just think about today but think about your plans for tomorrow as well.

Sound and spelling is essential

Is the business name you are considering easy to say and even easier to spell? Say it yourself and spell it yourself many times and make the determination. If your business were to be discussed on television or over the radio would people say it correctly? The best choice of business name rolls off the tongue easily, can be spelled with ease and does not require very much explanation and even less interpretation.
