Is it Normal for a Couple to Have Premarital Sex?

According to research studies, the vast number of people engage in premarital sex. An estimated nine out of 10 people have had sex before marriage. One of the reasons that people seem to engage in more premarital sex today than they did a few decades ago is that many people are getting married at an older age.

A study conducted by the federal National Survey of Family Growth looked at how sexual behavior has changed with the passing of the years. Interviews were done with 38,000 individuals (approximately 33,000 of these were females) and they compared their behavior in 1982 to 1988 to 1995 and finally in 2002. This study was done by a research director at the Guttmacher Institute in New York by the name of Lawrence Finer. The findings of the study were released in December 2006 and published in the latest issue of Public Health Reports.

According to the research done by Finer, 99 percent of those interviewed had had sex by the time they reached the age of 44 and of these, 95 percent had engaged in premarital sexual relations. A smaller subgroup of the larger whole had chosen to not have sex until they were 20 years of age and older. Of this group, four-fifths had chosen to engage in premarital sex by the time they reached 44 years of age.

An interesting angle to the study was that females were every bit as inclined to have premarital sex as were males. Of the women who were born between the years 1950 and 1978, an estimated 91 percent had engaged in premarital relations by the time they had reached the age of 30. The women born in the 1940s, an estimated 88 percent had engaged in premarital sex by the time they reached the age of 44 years.
