Clean Without Chlorine

Many detergents and other types of cleaning products contain chlorine. When these products are mixed with other compounds, they can produce toxic gases. Each chlorine molecule destroys tens of thousands of ozone molecules. Studies show that the amount of chlorine in our upper atmosphere has quadrupled in the last 25 years. Help save the earth by using chlorine-free detergents, toilet cleaners, disinfectants, and bleach.

The caustic soda in bleach-based toilet cleaners kills the valuable organisms needed to digest waste in sewage plants, making the sewage system inefficient and expensive. Try making your own toilet cleaner. Flush the toilet to wet the sides. Tip a cup of borax around the bowl. Drizzle white vinegar around the bowl. Leave overnight and then scrub with a toilet brush and flush.

Companies who make cleaners and other items without using bleach:

  • Seventh Generation (some of their products include: sanitary napkins, baby diapers, class cleaner, baby laundry detergent, fabric softener, bathroom tissue, and facial tissue)
  • Bi-O-Kleen

Concentrate

Try to buy concentrated products (products like dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent) as often as possible. This will keep a little extra money in your pocket because you won't be paying extra for product heavy with water that you can easily add yourself.

Say no to phosphates

Help protect rivers and waterways by choosing phosphate-free detergents and cleaning products. Many laundry detergents contain phosphates. Phosphates soften hard water. After phosphates are used in the washing machine, they make their way to the sewage system and cause problems in the waterways. Algae feed on phosphates. High levels of phosphates can cause algal blooms which use up all the oxygen in the water, suffocating plant and animal life.
