Mama's Kitchen Dilemmas



Candy Cane Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp of peppermint extract
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 tsp of vanilla
  • 1 cup of soft butter
  • 1 tbsp of red food coloring
  • 2 1/2 cups of flour

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla.
  4. Mix the flour, salt and baking powder together and add it to the butter mixture.
  5. Divide the dough into two parts
  6. Add the red food coloring to one of the two parts.
  7. Place the dough in the refrigerator for 3 hours.
  8. Take tbsp-size scoops from both the red and white dough.
  9. Roll the red and white dough balls separately into five-inch strips
  10. Twist the red and white dough balls together, forming them into the shape of a candy cane.
  11. Bake the cookies in a 375-degree oven for 8-10 minutes.

 

 

 

Molasses Drops

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cup of flour
  • 2 tsp of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of molasses
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup of shortening
  • 1/4 tsp of ground cloves
  • 1 tsp of ginger powder

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Combine the egg, shortening, and molasses.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Add the brown sugar, flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ground cloves, and ginger powder to the egg mixture.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Roll the dough into small balls.
  7. Sprinkle the tops of the dough balls with sugar and place them on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake the dough balls in a 375-degree oven for 11 minutes.

Makes: 3-dozen cookies
