Whole Wheat Bread vs. Wheat Bread

Much has been said about the difference between whole wheat bread and white bread but what about whole wheat bread versus wheat bread? Be aware that a bread that calls itself a wheat bread but does not say that it is whole wheat means that it is a combination of whole wheat flour and enriched white flour and for that reason it will contain a lesser degree of fiber than with breads that are deemed whole wheat breads. If a loaf of bread is made from 100% whole wheat then “whole wheat” or “whole grain” will be the very first ingredient that is listed on the bread label.

Whole wheat bread makes use of all three parts of the wheat, which includes the bran, the germ and the endosperm, and whole wheat bread contains the most fiber of all breads. Fiber is necessary for the proper functioning of the digestive system and it is a good way of maintaining a proper weight. Fiber is also helpful in lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Wheat bread is sometimes fortified with calcium and if you choose this option always look for bread that is high in this mineral, such as in 10 to 15 percent per slice as well as high in fiber. For wheat bread this is likely to mean 1 to 1.5 grams per slice.

What is your taste?

Taste will play a role in your decision of whether to buy whole wheat bread or wheat bread and many people do not like the taste and/or the texture of whole wheat bread but it is a taste that a person can come to enjoy with time. Whole wheat breads come out the biggest winners over wheat breads because they contain the most vitamins, minerals, and as previously mentioned, the highest amount of fiber. Whole wheat breads have plenty of vitamin B6, vitamin E, copper, folic acid, magnesium, manganese and zinc.

The new white whole wheat bread

Some bread companies have recently come out with a new type of bread, which is called white whole wheat bread. This bread combines the look and taste of white bread with the many health benefits of whole grain or whole wheat bread. The Government health guidelines strongly encourage everyone to eat at least three servings of whole grain each and every day and one way of getting the right amount is to eat whole wheat bread. Many people do not eat enough whole grain breads and that is why bread manufacturers came up with the concept of white whole wheat bread. The Food and Drug Administration deems that in order for a whole grain product to be called “whole grain” or “whole wheat” by weight it must contain a minimum of at least 51 percent of whole grains. While traditional whole wheat bread is made with red wheat, the newer white whole wheat bread is made using an albino combination of wheat.
