Second Trimester Month Four The second trimester is generally the most comfortable of all trimesters for women. Most women report that morning sickness is completely gone by the fourth month, and that energy levels are at an all time high. The frequent need to urinate may lessen somewhat, as well. While nausea is generally gone, other physical signs may be appearing. This can include an increase in waist size, heartburn, nasal congestion, increased appetite, varicose veins, and even hemorrhoids for the expectant mother who is constipated. Many women report frustration during this time due to being in-between wardrobes. Old clothes do not fit, while maternity clothes are still not needed. Some women also report that they feel “scatterbrained” and they have difficulty concentrating. Many women will feel the movement of their baby during the closing of the fourth month. If movement is not felt by the 20th to 22nd weeks, a doctor may perform an ultrasound to confirm the age of the fetus and the due date. As prenatal visits become routine, expectant mothers, in general, will have become comfortable with their doctors. Month Five Month Five is when women generally feel that their pregnancy is a reality. Their abdomens have grown and they may start wearing maternity clothes. This is also the time when expectant mothers start planning out nurseries and thinking of names for their babies. Physical symptoms may include fatigue and general aches and pains. Women will have to find a sleeping position that is comfortable for them during the fifth month. Backaches may start occurring and women may also notice that their shoes are becoming tight. Sexual relations may be of concern as couples may have to find different positions to have intercourse. These positions should be comfortable to the expectant mother and accommodate her extending abdomen. An ultrasound of the baby is usually recorded during this time. Expectant mothers will have to decide if they want to know the sex of their baby. Month Six An expectant mother will feel the movements of her baby on a regular basis by the sixth month. In fact, many women are surprised at their baby’s strength. The sixth month is also when others may also be able to feel the baby’s movement by placing their hands on the expectant mother’s abdomen. Women may have aches in their lower abdomen, as well as along their sides. This is caused by the stretching of ligaments that support the uterus. Swelling of the feet and hands may be pronounced in some women. Swelling of the face and hands may also occur. Itchy skin, a protruding naval and changes in skin pigmentation may also occur--which is normal. Emotionally, women may start to worry, or be nervous, about what the future holds for them in regards to childbirth and motherhood. Some women report becoming bored with their pregnancy and may even resent always being the center of attention.
