The Risks of Penile Enlargement Before making the final decision to have penile enlargement surgery whether it be penis widening or penis lengthening (or both) always discuss all of the complications that could arise after the surgery with the plastic surgeon. It is essential to make the surgeon aware of your medical history as well as any allergies that you have. According to the American Urolological Association the techniques and procedures used in penile enlargement surgery have not at present been proven through research studies to be completely effective or safe. It is not known whether the potential benefits of the penile surgery outweigh the possible dangers associated with it. This is something the patient considering the surgery must decide for himself. Be aware that penile enlargement is a very costly surgery and in the United States can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000. The risks associated with having penile lengthening surgery are not high but there are instances where patients do experience complications. Some patients will notice a decrease in how their penis is when it is in the erect and upward position. Some patients will notice a keloid scar developing at the surgical site. There are rare instances where the incisions on the skin separate as well as the chance that an infection will develop. Some patients experience a certain amount of bleeding and bruising as well as swelling of their penis but these are all temporary conditions. If these symptoms last for more than a few weeks then it is essential to go visit your doctor right away. In some cases the patient will find that their penis is lacking in sensation and erectile dysfunction is sometimes a temporary effect of penile lengthening surgery. Another rare side effect is when serum accumulates under the skin. When it comes to penile widening surgery the risks are relatively low but there are a small percentage of patients who do experience problems. One possible risk factor is absorption or when the graft contracts or fails to adhere to the penis as it is supposed to do. There are instances where the skin incision separates, inviting infection. In the case of the Allograft Dermal Matrix Graft, there are no incisions at the donor site whether it be the abdomen, buttocks, back, flanks or groin area. Keloid scars are possible except in the case of the Allograft Dermal Matrix Graft. Other possible complications of the widening procedure include when fibrosis of a vein that is superficial occurs as well as the apparent shortening of the penis and the risk of an infection developing. Some men will experience bleeding, bruising or swelling after the surgical procedure but these should all be temporary states. Some men are distressed to develop erectile dysfunction after the surgery as well as a loss of skin in the area of the penis and in rare cases a semi permanent (or sometimes even permanent) loss of sensation in the penis. It is rare but some patients develop an accumulation of serum under their skin that must be treated by the surgeon right away.
