What No One Tells You About a Neck Lift When people are very overweight their faces are large and round looking and their necks are very full looking and heavy with excess fat. Once a person loses the weight often the skin on the face and neck does not bounce back. This often gives the person a gaunt and aging look to their face and neck. The face tends to look loose, saggy and deflated. When facial skin sags it causes the appearance of heavy lines, in particular around the cheeks. When chubby cheeks lose their fat the skin loses its elasticity and hangs lower on the face, which gives the face the look of shadows on it. After significant weight loss the loose skin and jowls ends up hanging well below the jawline and over the neck. For many people this is unattractive looking and so they decide to have a neck lift to get their neck back into shape. Many people, especially those who have lost a considerable amount of weight, decide to have both a face lift as well as a neck lift done at the exact same period of time. It is all of the saggy, excess skin that makes a person look older than their years. Most face lifts and neck lifts that are performed due to a large quantity of excess skin are done by the plastic surgeon by making long incisions that are close to the hairline and then continuing the incision in front and bringing it around the ear. The incision will then travel down the hairline and go in behind the other ear and down further into the neck if it is called for. In order to repair the neck muscles in the front portion of the neck region, an extra incision will be made by the surgeon under the chin. Most of the time the combination face lift and neck lift is done at a hospital or private clinic on an outpatient basis. Some surgeons choose to use general anesthesia on their patients so they will be asleep during the two procedures whereas others opt for the use of local anesthesia and a light sedative. A neck lift when done alone or when done in conjunction with a face lift, is performed on an outpatient basis, however some surgeons prefer for their patients to spend a night at the hospital following the surgery for careful monitoring. If bleeding becomes a problem the surgeon may put plastic surgery drains in the patient's neck to get rid of the excess bleeding so that a second surgery does not become necessary. If drains are used they will be removed anywhere from one to four days after the surgery is done. Neck lifts are done on a variety of patients over the age of 18 years. Most commonly it is people in the 30 to 70 year age range who feel self conscious about their necks and request this surgical procedure.
