What To Expect After Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

All surgeries carry with them their share of risks and vaginal rejuvenation is no different. One of the major disadvantages of this surgery is that it can cause a great deal of scar tissue. This surgical procedure results in the severing of nerve endings and some women report losing all feeling in the lower end of their vaginas afterwards. Others report that the loss of sensation is only temporary and goes away in a matter of weeks or months.

This surgery is generally done in a hospital or clinic on an outpatient basis and is done under general anesthesia. There will be some pain and discomfort after the surgery and patients can expect a certain amount of swelling as well. Pain medication will be prescribed by the plastic surgeon to help the patient get through the first few weeks following the surgery. Very often the plastic surgeon will prescribe antibiotics to the patient following the surgery in the event that an infection was to develop. The majority of patients are on their feet and walking around within a few days, which is strongly recommended by the surgeon to encourage proper blood circulation.

It usually only takes a few short weeks (in the area of two to three) for the results of the surgery to become obvious. Many patients are able to return to work in a matter of weeks but are cautioned not to lift anything heavy or to bend or exert themselves too much as this can adversely affect the healing process. It is also important that patients do not strain too much when defecating as this can also wreck havoc with the stitches. The muscles of the vagina must remain intact during the recovery period and anything that can potentially open up the stitches is not a good thing. Patients of this surgery must avoid sexual intercourse for a period of at least four to six weeks and it is important to refrain from douching or the use of tampons for this same period of time.

The plastic surgeon will teach the patient some simple exercises that can support healing as well as to encourage blood flow in the vaginal area, which is so integral to the entire recovery process. Light stretching exercises can also help to prevent the formation of scar tissue so make sure you pay close attention to the plastic surgeon’s instructions.

If swelling or bruising continue for too long a period of time or if you develop redness, or puffiness around the incision site then go see your doctor right away. If you develop a fever then this is a sign that an infection is starting so do not hesitate to go to visit the doctor immediately for treatment. It is important to schedule a follow up appointment with the plastic surgeon no matter what but in the meantime if symptoms that something has gone wrong following the surgery arise always take them seriously and have them checked out.
