What to Expect After Penile EnlargementPenile enlargement surgery, also known as phalloplasty, can be broken down into two categories- there is the enlargement in length procedure and the enlargement in width (or girth) surgery. In most cases penile enlargement is performed in a hospital or clinic under general anesthesia and the procedure can take anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours to complete. In order to widen the penis, free fat transfer is done or grafting. The two most often used substances for penile grafting include the ALLODERM graft and the dermis-fat graft. The most recent type of surgery for penile enlargment is called the MISL procedure, which is more specifically the Minimally Invasive Surgery with Laser. After penile enlargement surgery is completed the patient will be required to wear a light pressure dressing for the first couple of days following surgery and they are encouraged to keep the penis elevated as well as to wear jockey shorts for support. Generally both the penis and the scrotum will be bruised and swollen after the surgery and this can last for up to a period of two to three weeks. Soreness will be felt in the groin area as well as all over the pubic area but the pain and discomfort can be relieved by pain medication prescribed to the patient. Approximately two to three days following the surgery the patient will need to return to see the plastic surgeon to see if the penis and surrounding area is healing properly. After this follow up appointment with the surgeon the patient will be able to take a shower or bath and can at this time begin to take responsibility for his own care of the wound as well as shaft wrapping. The sutures from the surgery will be taken out anywhere from 7 to 10 days after the procedure. Once a week has passed after surgery, the plastic surgeon will strongly recommend that the patient manually stretch the penis. Another thing that the surgeon will recommend is that the patient engage in a weight program after the surgery. The weight program is when weights or some other form of traction are hung carefully from the penis in order to both sustain as well as to increase the penis' length. For the lengthening procedure the weights will be used for a period of two weeks at a time. If fat autografts were used then the weights will be used for three weeks and for flaps or derma fat grafts the weights will be used for approximately four to five weeks after the surgery. Some patients are encouraged to continue to use the weights for at least six months or more on account of the fact that this will decrease the chance of the penis retracting and it will also continue to stretch the skin found on the shaft of the penis as well as continue to lengthen the penis by the simple act of stretching tissues that were not cut during the surgical procedure.
