The best way to get the vitamins and minerals you need is through food. However, for some people, a vitiman or minteral supplement may be appropriate.

You may need supplements if:

  • You are age 65 or over. As you get older, your body may not be able to absorb vitamins and minerals as well as it used to.
  • Your a postmenopausal woman.
  • You don't eat well.
  • You're on a very low calorie diet. A very low calorie diet is a diet with 1000 or less calories.
  • You smoke.
  • You drink alcohol excessively. Alcohol inhibits the absorption of thiamin, folate and vitamins A, D and B-12.

  • You are breast-feeding.
  • You eat a special diet. Vegetarians may need additional supplements, especially if they do not eat dairy products.
  • You have a chronic condition. Some chronic medical conditions increase your need for a variety of vitamins and minerals.
