What to Expect as a Sperm Donor

The sperm donation process is a bit more complex than most people realize. There are various steps which the donor must take along the way. The entire process can take a while to complete.

Pick a Sperm Bank

The first step is to pick a sperm bank. It is best to select one near where you live because you will have to visit the bank from time to time. When choosing a sperm bank, consider the reputation of the sperm bank, the procedure which that particular sperm bank follows and the compensation involved.

Fill Out Paperwork

Once a sperm bank is chosen the potential donor will have to fill out paperwork. The paperwork involves questionnaires and medical history questions. The paperwork will be detailed and the donor will have to give honest answers to the questions.

Specimen Screening

As soon as the paperwork has been filled out and reviewed by the sperm bank, the applicant will be contacted to provide a sperm specimen. The specimen will be tested by the sperm bank to determine its potency, mobility, and quality.

Personal Profile

The next step is to obtain a personal profile of the applicant. Various pieces of information will be collected such as scholarly background, family background, and medical history. This information will be important to the recipients of the sperm donations.

Physical Examination

The donor will then be given a thorough medical examination to ensure that they will provide healthy sperm. This can be quite detailed so the sperm donor must be sure that they wish to undergo a thorough physical examination of this type prior to becoming a donor.

Approval and Sperm Donations

The final step in the process, if all of the aforementioned has been acceptable to the sperm bank, is approval and subsequent sperm donations. Once approved, the sperm donor is usually required to provide at least one sperm donation per week for a period of six months. However this time period of sperm donation will vary from facility to facility. In exchange for providing sperm donations, the donor will be compensated per donation at a rate determined by the facility.
