What Is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men (excluding skin cancer) in the United States. It is usually found in older men, and the risk of having prostate cancer increases with age. It is mainly found in men of 55 years and above. In this disease, cancer cells are first formed in the prostate and can then spread to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and other selected structures.

What is the Prostate?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that makes and stores seminal fluid. Seminal fluid is a milky liquid that nourishes sperm. The prostate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It encircles the upper part of the urethra, which is the tube that empties urine from the bladder.

The prostate is a part of every man's reproductive system. It requires male hormones, like testosterone, to function properly, helping to regulate bladder control and normal sexual functioning.

Cause of Prostate cancer?

Put in the simplest way, no one knows what causes some men to get prostate cancer while other men don't. Scientists and clinical researchers are working very hard to try to discover the answer to this very basic question. We hope they will find the answer soon. In the meantime, here are most of the things we do know.

Symptoms of Prostate cancer?

There are no definitive symptoms of prostate cancer which can be easily assessed by the patient himself. Also, prostate cancer usually does not cause signs or symptoms for many years after the disease starts to develop.

Some of the symptoms that have been identified by the National Cancer Institute as possible indicators of prostate cancer are:

  • Frequent urination (especially at night)
  • Inability to urinate
  • Trouble starting to urinate or trouble holding back urination
  • Pain during ejaculation
  • A weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Pain or a burning feeling during urination
  • Blood in the semen or in the urine
  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

These symptoms may also be symptoms of other conditions, so please consult your doctor.

Risks of Prostate cancer?

A man's risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age. Although it can occur at any age, it is most often found in men over the age of 50, and more than 75 percent of tumors are found in men over age 65.

Can Prostate Cancer be Treated?

Prostate cancer can be treated . Please consult your doctor about your treatment options

Does treatment of prostate cancer have side effects?

Yes. Every form of treatment currently available for the management of prostate cancer has risks and possible side effects. You should discuss these risks and side effects with your doctor.

Can Prostate cancer be prevented?

The current research shows that prostate cancer cannot be prevented. However, it has been strongly argued by health professionals that avoiding a diet high in saturated fats may decrease the risk of developing prostate cancer.
