Dry Orgasms

What is a dry orgasm?

A dry orgasm is an orgasm with no discharge of semen. Dry ejaculation does not mean impotence or an inability to achieve orgasm. It is simply a lack of ejaculatory fluid.

What causes a dry orgasm?

A dry orgasm can be caused by several types of health conditions. The most common causes of dry orgasms are:

Causes of dry orgasm include:

  • Retrograde ejaculation causes semen to be released into the bladder instead of out through the penis.
  • Surgical removal of the prostate.
  • Surgical removal of the bladder.
  • Radiation therapy directed at the pelvic area.

How are dry orgasms treated?

Treatment for dry orgasms will depend on the cause. If dry orgasms are caused by retrograde ejaculation, then retrograde ejaculation must be treated.

What is normal size ejaculation?

  • Men aged 20–30 years ejaculate about 4.0 mL of sperm.
  • Men aged 30–50 years ejaculate about 3.5 mL of sperm.
  • Men aged 60–70 years ejaculate about 2 mL of sperm.
  • Men older than 70 years ejaculate about 1 mL of sperm.

These ejaculation figures come a survey published in Human Reproduction (2003;18:447–54) and they are averages. Some men in each age group will produce a lot more sperm and some a lot less sperm.

Dry orgasm after a Prostatectomy (Removal of Prostate)

A prostatectomy involves removal of the prostate gland and the seminal vesicles that produce the fluid medium for the sperm cells generated by the testicles. After the removal of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles, the testicles still produce sperm cells. However, during ejaculation, the sperm have nowhere to go and are reabsorbed by the body.
