Meeting the in-laws

Easy tips on how to have a great time when you meet your in-laws for the first time

  1. Do your homework. Before meeting your partner’s parents, ask them to provide you with a brief background of them. Ask your partner what their parents like, what they don’t like, and what they are adamantly against. It is important to know if your partner’s parents are extremely religious, or have strong political views.
  2. Be Polite. Using correct grammar, saying “please” and “thank you,” and offering to help set the table or mix the cake batter.
  3. Dress appropriately. If you are meeting them at a backyard bbq, this isn't the time to wear your favorite evening gown.
  4. Show Interest. Ask questions and make comments that let them know you care. Showing interest in someone, or someone’s family, is one of the best ways to make them interested in you.
  5. Stay sober: If you plan on drinking alcohol, make sure you don't drink too much. And try not to get too trashed while you are there. OK you may be nervous but flirting outrageously with one or both of their parents probably isn't the best way forward.
  6. Talk to them: Pick easy topics of conversation which can't get too heated. Try not to us too much profanity and don't just talk about yourself.
  7. Take a time out. If the atmosphere gets tense, or you are too nervous, volunteer to clear the table, do the dishes, walk the dog or do something that lets you leave the room for a few minutes.
