Using Birth Control Pills to Balance Hormones

Birth control pills can be used for much more than contraception, they can be utilized to control menstrual cramps, regulate periods and balance hormones.  The same system for taking a birth control pill as a contraceptive is used when taking the pill for hormone balance.

The typical hormone imbalance is caused by a deficiency or surplus of the hormones estrogen or progesterone.  These hormones can become unbalanced through a variety of reasons including:

  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Adrenal fatigue

Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance

Symptoms of hormonal imbalance can include acne, fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, irregular menstrual cycles, excess body hair, low libido and depression. These symptoms should not go unchecked as they could be symptoms of much more serious medical problems affecting the thyroid or reproductive organs.

Birth control pills are made up of the female hormone estrogen and a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone called progestin. Their main purpose is to inhibit pregnancy by keeping a woman’s ovaries from releasing eggs but can be used to regulate hormones.

The first step to using birth control pills to balance hormones is to see a health care provider. They will perform a battery of tests to diagnose the problem. Once a diagnosis has been made and birth control is recommended the patient can begin to work with their provider to find the right pill. Most women use a combination pill with estrogen and progestin.

Benefits of Using Birth Control Pills to Balance Hormones

There are several benefits to using birth control pills to balance hormones. Many women report that symptoms such as heavy periods, acne, low libido and increased body hair subside within a few days. Birth control pills also provide protection against osteoporosis, anemia, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.

The same pill regimen should be followed for hormone therapy as pregnancy prevention. Most pills come in a 28 or 21 day pack and have convenient packaging that marks the days you should take them. It’s best to take the pill at the same time every day to establish the habit.
