Dealing With Questions

Parents

If you have decided to homeschool, concerned parents, friends and family members may ask many questions. Most people ask questions because they are curious about the homeschooling lifestyle. However, it can feel like an invasion of your privacy if you are constantly being bombarded with questions.

Advocates of homeschooling encourage new families to come up with a generic set of answers to appease the individuals who are asking you questions.

Below is a list of questions that many homeschoolers are asked on a continual basis. Many parents find they are able to answer these, and many other questions, without much thought over time.

  • What about socialization?
  • How can you teach if you are not a certified teacher?
  • Will your children get a diploma?
  • Will your child be able to go to college?
  • Don’t you get tired of being with your children all day?
  • What’s wrong with the schools in our area?
  • How can your kids come to know about life if you shelter them?
  • What about graduation?
  • What about the Prom?
  • Why do you homeschool?
  • What do you teach them?
  • Where do you get your books?

Children

Children who are homeschooled will also be asked a lot of questions. Your children may find they are on the receiving end of questions by both adults and other children. Children usually answer questions openly and honestly, which may cause some parents to cringe. However, generally speaking, children sometimes seem better able to handle questions about their homeschooling life with less difficulty than their parents.

Below is a list of questions many homeschooled children are asked.

  • Do you have any friends?
  • Don’t you get sick of being at home all the time?
  • Don’t you want to play sports?
  • You don’t have a social life, do you?
  • Don’t you get bored?
  • Why do you want to homeschool?
  • Don’t you like public school?
  • Do you wish your parents would let you go to school?
  • How do you get your grades?
  • Do your parents give you an “A” in everything?
  • Do you get to go to college?
  • Don’t you want to be around kids your age?
  • What time do you get up in the morning?
  • How many hours a day do you do your schoolwork?
  • How do you have homework when you do your schoolwork at home?
