Is it Legal to Homeschool?

Yes. It is legal to homeschool your child in any of the fifty states, as well as Washington, D.C.

What Does My State Require to Homeschool?

Some states are more lenient than others in regards to homeschooling. Each state has their own guidelines as to homeschooling. It is important to learn what is required in your state and keep yourself updated as to any changes which may arise. You can contact the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) to learn the specific laws in your state in regards to homeschooling your children.

Usually, members in homeschool support groups individuals have helped paved the way for many homeschoolers and are generally more than happy to tell you what is required in your state.

Is There a National Organization or Regulatory Board That We Should Enroll in?

No. Many parents who are misinformed about homeschool regulations. Parents are often told by some that they must enroll their children in a national organization. That is not true, as one does not exist. The only requirement you have is to meet the homeschool laws in your state. Homeschoolers are accountable to the state government, not the federal government.

One of the most helpful resource to help get started with homeschooling is a local homeschool support group. Members in the support group can guide you and make you feel comfortable with the homeschooling process.

What You Should Know If You Become a Homeschooling Parent

Most homeschool families do not want homeschooling to be regulated by state and/or federal laws. As a result, these individuals keep themselves abreast of all the happenings in regards to homeschooling at the local, state and federal levels.

As a homeschooler, you can become involved in the homeschool movement in your state and become an active participant in educating officials and others about homeschooling. As a citizen, you can influence how much, or how little, educational freedom your state gives its homeschooling families.
