The Risks of Hair Transplantation SurgeryBefore making the final decision to have hair transplantation surgery it is important to consider all of the risks and to weigh those carefully with the benefits of having the surgery. How successful the procedure is depends a great deal on the amount of hair follicles that remain as healthy as possible upon being transplanted to another area of the scalp. Sometimes one surgery is not enough to replace all of the lost hair and therefore more than one procedure must be undertaken. The more times surgery must be undertaken, the more risks are involved. The risks of hair transplant surgery include the death of hair follicles once they have been placed elsewhere on the head. This will result in no new hair growth in the transplanted area whatsoever. Another risk is that of an unnatural look developing with a pattern on the hair that is patchy. This could necessitate a second surgery to correct the problem. Three of the other risks of hair transplant surgery are common to all surgical procedures but tend to be rare and these include the risk of excessive bleeding during and after the procedure; the risk of infection and the risk of scarring. Scarring sometimes takes place at the site where the hair is taken from but the majority of scars are very tiny and barely noticeable and will quickly and easily be covered up by the new growth of hair that comes in. If an infection takes place it is more likely to occur at the graft site instead of at the transplant site. Some surgeons will prescribe antibiotics to a patient before the procedure as a precaution while others will do so afterwards if an infection does happen to flare up. The greatest worry when it comes to hair transplant surgery is that the grafts will not take and therefore there will be no new hair growth. In some cases the skin plug will die and this will render the surgery unsuccessful. Another thing that can happen is that an unnatural look can occur to the scalp that looks patchy and uneven. Another surgery or even more than one surgery may then need to be undertaken to correct the problem. Often the best way to prevent complications is to make sure the cosmetic surgeon is completely aware of your medical history and your lifestyle and to follow all pre-op and post-op instructions exactly as they are given to you. Smokers should quit smoking at least three to four weeks before the surgery as smoking can inhibit the proper healing of wounds. This is the case for all types of surgery, and not just cosmetic procedures. Be aware that while hair transplant surgery is a permanent way of treating hair loss it is also costly and some patients may need to undergo multiple surgeries. Also be aware that the process of new hair growth can be very slow after the procedure is done. Some patients must wait up to two years before they see the hair growth that they have been yearning for.
