Dealing With Frizz One of the worst things to deal with when it comes to hair care is the problem of frizzyness and flyaways. “Frizz” typically refers to a hair condition caused by moisture issues— there are two types of frizz, one caused by hair that’s too wet, and one caused by hair that is too dry. Curly hair usually suffers from the “too wet” kind of frizziness, while straight hair tends to get flyaways from being entirely too dry. Some types of hair even get frizzy from both sets of conditions! Regardless of what sets off the frizz for your hair, there are a number of ways to tame your tresses and get the kind of hair you deserve. Frizzy Hair That Is Too Moist If your hair tends to frizz up if it’s been raining or it’s particularly humid outside, then this is the type of frizz you suffer from. With moisture frizz, the ambient humidity in the air soaks into the shafts of your hair strands, and then each strand of hair begins to swell. You might even notice that your hair isn’t just getting frizzy, it’s getting curlier! That’s because it’s actually the swelling that’s causing the frizz. In order to strike a happy balance with this kind of hair, you need to find products and a beauty routine that help you to keep your hair at its ideal moisture level— which means locking in the moisture you want, and keeping out the moisture that would cause your hair to frizz up. Look for products with words like “smoothing” or “finisher”’— they will keep your hair soft and seal out the humidity. Frizzy Hair That Is Too Dry Besides the occasional dry and itchy scalp, one of the big problems with dry hair is the frizziness. With dry or particularly damaged hair, static electricity is your big enemy: dry hair can get a negative charge that both shocks you when you touch metal doorknobs and causes your hair shafts to repel each other, causing serious frizzing issues. In this particular case, it’s most important to find conditioners and other moisture-enhancing products to fill in the porous parts of each hair shaft and calm your hair without giving it a greasy or oily look. Products with words like “Mending,” “Healing, “Flyaways” and “Repair” will moisturize your locks and get all the unruly strands of hair under control for a sleek and beautiful result.
