When purchasing products packaged in polyvinyl chloride, you must ask yourself if the convenience is worth the risk. Phthalates Products that are made out of vinyl are usually softened with phthalates. The phthalates are used on clothing, shoes, toys, food packages and food wrappers as well as many types of medical supplies and equipment. This chemical has been linked to both respiratory and infertility problems as well as birth defects and cancer. Bisphenol A Commercial water bottles usually contain Bisphenol A however some companies have bottles that are BPA free. Hyperactivity and the early onset of puberty have been linked to BPA. There are also immunity deficiencies and cancers believed to be a result from drinking water that has been infused with Bisphenol A.Polystyrene There are loads of products that are made from polystyrene including CD cases, disposable cutlery, food containers and swimming tubes for pools. Polystyrene can irritate the user’s eyes and cause a burning sensation in the nose and throat. Prolonged use can result in dizziness and even unconsciousness. In a pool area, this could certainly lead to death by drowning. Those that work around or use polystyrene daily can also get cancer from this exposure. Most plastics contain harmful chemicals and you must research and use them wisely. It is essential that you not reuse plastics. Plastics are usually meant for one time use. Reusing plastic items can cause further leaching of the chemicals into your food. |
