Do Plastics Cause Health Problems?

Plastics are commonplace in our society today. Just walk down the aisles at the grocery store. There are tons of products that are sold to consumers in plastic containers. You can buy almost anything encased in plastic including salads, rice and even meat. Plastics have many toxins and should be avoided as much as possible.

Polyvinyl Chloride

Polyvinyl chloride is used for both food packaging and plastic wrap. This is a dangerous substance and it becomes even more dangerous when microwaved. The chemicals in the plastic can leach into the food and then, the consumer consumes the chemically infused food.

There are a plethora of health problems that can occur from eating products containing polyvinyl chloride. They can cause birth defects in children. The chemical can also cause simple indigestion, ulcers, respiratory problems, deafness, blindness and cancer. When purchasing products packaged in polyvinyl chloride, you must ask yourself if the convenience is worth the risk.

Phthalates

Products that are made out of vinyl are usually softened with phthalates. The phthalates are used on clothing, shoes, toys, food packages and food wrappers as well as many types of medical supplies and equipment. This chemical has been linked to both respiratory and infertility problems as well as birth defects and cancer.

Bisphenol A

Commercial water bottles usually contain Bisphenol A however some companies have bottles that are BPA free. Hyperactivity and the early onset of puberty have been linked to BPA. There are also immunity deficiencies and cancers believed to be a result from drinking water that has been infused with Bisphenol A.

Polystyrene

There are loads of products that are made from polystyrene including CD cases, disposable cutlery, food containers and swimming tubes for pools. Polystyrene can irritate the user’s eyes and cause a burning sensation in the nose and throat. Prolonged use can result in dizziness and even unconsciousness. In a pool area, this could certainly lead to death by drowning. Those that work around or use polystyrene daily can also get cancer from this exposure.

Most plastics contain harmful chemicals and you must research and use them wisely. It is essential that you not reuse plastics. Plastics are usually meant for one time use. Reusing plastic items can cause further leaching of the chemicals into your food.
