What Are The Pesticides Used On Different Vegetables?

Pesticides are used on most of the vegetables found in your grocery store. Buying organically grown vegetables is a much healthier way to consume the needed vitamins and minerals for your body. Unfortunately, organic foods can be significantly more expensive. Local farmers markets are a great place to find organic vegetables and they are usually less expensive than supermarket prices.

Celery and Pesticides

The vegetable that contains the most pesticide residue is celery. Celery is a low carb vegetable that contains Vitamins C, K A as well as Niacin and Folate. It can be consumed cooked or raw and is considered an aromatic vegetable.

There are a variety of pesticides used to keep the celery crop healthy such as Dichloran, Malathion, Copper Hydroxide and Carbaryl.  The Environmental Protection Agency believes that Dichloran, when used properly has no health risks for humans. Malathion is a very dangerous pesticide. Exposure to Malathion can cause stomach pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Copper Hydroxide is a known carcinogen and causes reproductive problems and developmental disorders. The pesticide Carbaryl is known to cause headaches, muscle cramps, anorexia and memory loss.

Organic celery is a better option. Unfortunately, it is nearly double the price of regular celery. You can save some money and eliminate the health risks of pesticides by growing your own celery or buying it from a local, organic farm.

Bell Peppers and Pesticides

Bell Peppers are a great source of fiber, Vitamin A and Vitamin C. They can be served raw or cooked and are almost always on a crudité platter. There are 64 different pesticides that are used on Bell Peppers to control insects and disease.

Oftentimes, pesticide residue remains on the peppers when offered for sale in the grocery store. Even after washing them carefully and thoroughly, all of the residue will not be removed. Complications from using pesticides and consuming peppers with residue can vary from simple headaches to nausea and vomiting to convulsions.

Eliminating pesticides in our diet would result in a healthier population. Organically grown Bell Peppers are safer and healthier for you but the cost is higher. Peppers are easy to grow in a backyard garden or even in a container garden. Growing your own Peppers is not only satisfying but will ensure that there are no harmful pesticides in your kitchen.

Spinach and Pesticides

Spinach is a very healthy vegetable that should be included in your diet. Popeye knew that spinach is good for you a long, long time ago. However, the pesticides that are used today can be harmful to your health.

The United States Department of Agriculture has found forty-eight different pesticide residues on commercially grown spinach. Eight of the pesticides are either known carcinogens or have the potential to be carcinogenic. Another eight of the residues are neurotoxins and six are known to cause reproductive problems or developmental issues. Twenty-five of the pesticides are suspected to cause a disruption in the production of necessary hormones.

Organic spinach doesn’t have pesticide residues. It’s best to buy organic at the grocery store or directly from an organic farmers market. It will be more expensive than commercially grown spinach but if you value the health of your family, it will be well worth it.
