On The Case: How to Choose the Best Divorce Lawyer For You
by Kim Hess

When you hire someone to work for you, it’s important to do a little background check to help determine if this person best suits your needs.  Review resumes, talk with referrals, and talk to your local better business bureau.

Use these tips so you can choose a lawyer that best fits your needs:

Good Referral Sources

  • Ask trustworthy friends and family members for a referral. Your friends who have been through a divorce may recommend their lawyers too. You can also check a list of your local bar association members which may be able to provide good services at a low fee.

Chemistry

  • As with any working relationship, chemistry between you and your lawyer is important. Do not hire someone you are not comfortable working with.

Fees and Billing

  • It is best to know the lawyer’s financial fees even before you hire them.  Make sure that all financial details and arrangements are put into writing and all fees are clear before signing any documents.

How to Interview a Lawyer

  • Questions should focus on details about their competency as a mediator, how many divorce cases they have handled and where they went to law school. It is also important to ask about day-to-day operations like availability for phone calls and if there associates  will work on your case. Anticipate some problems that you might be faced with (you can base this from your family and friend’s experiences) and let your lawyer respond to such queries. Before the interview, write down your questions. Bring the list of questions with you to the interview.

After deciding on the right lawyer for you, he or she will have you sign a detailed financial agreement for. Before doing so, make sure that you have read all the details and take time to think of additional questions that you can ask. Choosing the best divorce lawyer for you is a giant forward step towards gaining confidence and handling your divorce correctly.
