Living Healthy with Diabetes

Good care can help prevent serious health problems like (like heart disease, eye disease, kidney disease and nerve disease) that often occur if you have diabetes.

Important things to do to remain healthy

If you have diabetes, the most important thing you can do to maintain a healthy life is to have regular check-ups with your Doctor. Your regular check-ups should include:

  1. A yearly test to check your eyes for diabetes eye disease
  2. A yearly urine test to check your kidneys. This test is called a microalbuminuria test and checks for protein in your urine that might mean there is damage to your kidneys.
  3. Blood fats test (total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides) at least every year or more frequently if your doctor thinks it is needed.
  4. A blood sugar test called the hemoglobin A1c test two to four times each year as determined by your doctor. This blood test will tell your doctor what your average blood sugar has been over the past 3-4 months.
  5. A foot exam each office visit to check for any loss of feeling or poor blood circulation.
