Asthma Statistics

  • Asthma is most common in childhood and occurs in approximately 7-10% of the pediatric population.
  • Asthma accounts for 1/4 of school absenteeism.
  • It affects twice as many boys as girls in childhood
  • In Canada, approximately 20 children and 500 adults die each year from asthma.
  • African-Americans are nearly three times as likely as whites to die of asthma.
  • Each year, asthma costs more than $4.6 billion in medical care and time lost from school or work.
  • Asthma is the number one reason why children miss school and the leading reason why children are admitted to the hospital.
  • More children than adults have asthma. (asthma may go into remission and may not appear during adulthood).
  • About 14.6 million Americans have asthma.

Asthma and Sports

Children who play sports in areas with high levels of air pollution are 3 to 4 times more likely to develop asthma than other youngsters. A study conducted by researchers at the Keck School of Medicine at USC showed that pollution in the ozone can contribute to asthma. The study involved 3,500 children between the ages of 9 and 16 who had no history of asthma. The study will be published in the Lancet Medical Journal.
