What is Traditional Chinese Medicine? Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) refers to an ancient practice that dates back thousands of years. Many famous Chinese philosophers and religious leaders were skilled in the practice of Chinese medicine. Daoist and Buddhist monks still use it in their congregations today. Traditional Chinese medicine centers on the belief that all illness and discomfort come about because of imbalance and disharmony. Restoring harmony and balance is the main goal of this ancient practice. According to TCM, Qi energy flows through the body and is the life force that keeps harmony throughout the body. When there is illness or malaise, it is because this life force is stagnant or blocked. Unblocking the movement of Qi is the essential focus of TCM. There are several branches of TCM. They include acupuncture, herbal medicine, Qigong, and massage. Acupuncture Acupuncture involves the use of needles. These needles are placed at special points along the body that correlate with meridian pathways. When inserted into the skin the needles stimulate various parts of the body. This stimulation releases endorphins and opens up blocked passageways. Qi flow is restored afterwards. Herbal Medicine Herbs are prescribed for a wide variety of ailments and disorders. After a patient is assessed, an herbal remedy is concocted to treat the individual condition. There are over 600 herbs used today by practitioners of TCM. The potential combinations are endless. Qigong Qigong therapy involves meditation, body movements, and exercises such as Tai Chi. Qigong is used as a means to prevent disease and improve health. It includes breathing exercises and postures that help increase stamina and restore the flow of Qi. Massage Chinese massage practices, such as Tui Na, are much like western physical therapy. The intensity and muscle manipulation involved in Chinese massage promote circulation and healing. This type of massage also helps balance yin and yang. Emotional or mental illnesses can be significantly improved with this method.
