The 7 Internal Causes of Disharmony In traditional Chinese medicine, there are 7 emotions that lead to disharmony. They cover the entire spectrum of human emotion. They are all normal responses to certain aspects of our lives and environment. However, they become problematic when they become very intense or excessive. When this happens for prolonged periods of time, Qi can become stagnant, resulting in illness. The seven emotions are:
Sadness can build up in the body and lead to depression, fatigue and shortness of breath. Prolonged sadness can also lead to asthma, allergies, colds, and the flu. Grief can weaken the immune system and lead to upper respiratory infections. Grief also depletes Qi and will eventually lead to chronic fatigue syndrome. Pensiveness will aggravate the digestive system. Spleen problems will also occur. With pensiveness in excess comes the loss of appetite, extreme fatigue, and worry. This is where the saying “sick with worry” originates. The weakened spleen will also lead to tiredness and loose stools. Fear affects the kidneys and can result in lower back problems. Long term feelings of fear can cause back problems and joint pain. Night sweats, dry mouth, and bedwetting can also occur when fear has permeated the system. Fright and shock lead to palpitations and breathlessness. They may cause kidney problems also. Since shock puts an incredible strain on the kidneys it can lead to problems with lower back pain. Anger leads to dizziness and hypertension. Prolonged headaches and mental confusion can afflict someone who carries around too much anger. Depression can result if anger is left unchecked. Joy can have negative affects if it is excessive. It can alter concentration and lead to sleep problems. Joy can affect the heart and cause hysteria.
