Traditional Chinese Medicine for the Treatment of Infertility

Infertility issues currently plague roughly one out of every five couples.  There are many types of medicines and treatments to treat infertility, as well as many different things that can cause it. While Western medicine can successfully treat some cases, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) offers alternative, safe, and natural ways to treat many fertility problems.

TCM teaches that disorders or difficulties such as infertility are the symptom of bigger problems. If there is a problem with the reproductive system, it is usually due to a blockage of Qi or a problem with another body system. A disharmony of the yin and yang organs and the blood may also cause fertility problems. Enhancing the overall good health of the whole body and restoring the flow of Qi will balance the reproductive system which can increase fertility.

Couples struggling with infertility issues may choose to seek a diagnosis and treatment based in Western medicine; however, treatments to restore Qi, such as acupuncture, may be all that is needed. TCM treatments can bring harmony to the thyroid and adrenal glands – two glands that regulate hormones.

To better balance the organs of the reproductive system, Chinese herbs and treatments that stimulate digestion may be beneficial by helping the body eliminate waste. Chinese cleansing and detoxifying herbal treatments will clear out toxins that may be interfering with the natural balance of the reproductive system. There are many herbal teas and pills that help to regulate the menstrual cycle, which is vital to fertility. Some of the teas need to be taken at certain times through the woman’s cycle in order to be effective.

Some people may question how treatments used in Traditional Chinese medicine can help couples become fertile.   Recent studies in China, however, have shown a 70% success rate for some of these ancient treatments including herbal teas and acupuncture.
